Say Howdy To New Updates on Big Thunder Mountain

The wildest ride in the wilderness opens back up in 2026 and updates on the refurbishment have been released

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for refurbishment, but the wildest ride in the wilderness is getting ready to thrill guests again in 2026. We just found out some new details for the ride, so hang on to your hats and take a look at the changes.

The back story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad goes back to the American Gold Rush days when Barnabas T. Bullion struck gold in the region and started the Big Thunder Mountain Company. However, things were not all as they seemed. Battling forces of nature, one day things started occurring such as machine failures and cave ins. No matter what Bullion did the mountain fought back. Next year, when you get to board the runaway train once more, you will find out just how wild things got.

The refurbishment is aimed at keeping the magic fresh for riders new and old. So the fun of Big Thunder Mountain will still be there but with some added magic to delight.

One such new element is when the trains head into the underground caverns full of phosphorescent pools! The pools will shimmer and illuminate iridescent stalagmites and stalactites. The Rainbow Caverns are certainly beautiful but are they as friendly as they seem? A menacing rumble from deep in the mountains may mean things aren't as welcoming as they first appear.

More new elements are set to excite guests when Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opens back up in 2026 but for now the other elements are under wraps. No exact date has been released yet for the Grand reopening but we will keep you updated as we get more information. The update to Big Thunder Mountain sounds fantastic!

Are you excited to ride Big Thunder again next year?
